The GameCube controller will initially only be ordered for Nintendo Switch online members.
The cheers at retro fans were great when Nintendo announced as part of the April Direct that everyone would have access to selected GameCube games with a switch 2 and a Switch online + expansion pass subscription. Appropriately, Nintendo will also offer a corresponding GameCube controller via the in-house My Nintendo Store.
But there are already some irritation about this controller. Because at the end of the official announcement video for the Switch 2-Gamecube games is in a fairly small script at the upper edge of the screen.
“This controller is only compatible with Nintendo Gamecube – Nintendo Classics”
Here you can see the fading yourself – it appears at about minute 2:14.

On Switch 2 you can catch up with GameCube classics – with Nintendo Switch Online
What speaks against a Gamecube restriction
If that is actually the case and the controller would not be compatible with “normal” Switch games, you would buy a 70-euro controller with which only three games can be played effectively for the launch (The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soul Calibur 2, F-Zero GX).
In addition, it seems questionable why Nintendo should give the controller new keys such as the C-button and a (small) left bumper if other titles that use these buttons are not playable.
Also against the background that Nintendo made similar comments on previous retro controllers such as the N64 pad, but they were then also usable for other games, we assume that you will also be able to use the GameCube controller at least in the medium term for other Switch 2 games-even if there is of course no guarantee.
Access to the Gamecube games mentioned should be possible directly at the start of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. As mentioned, you need a paid switch online + expansion pass subscription, further titles should then be added over time.
