Focus on PvP or PVE? According to the bungie, it will not be a Destiny 3

Bungie does not position “Marathon” as a “Destiny” replacement, but aims primarily with the extraction shooter on fans of PvP-Sandbox games, which should be offered “something very exciting”. Game Director Joe Ziegler now made it clear that players who prefer PVE experiences are probably not happy with “Marathon”.

Marathon focuses on the PvP experience

Like Ziegler in an interview with Games radar initially made it clear, one does not want to replace “Destiny” with “marathon”. There are also “some differences” between the two titles. According to this, players of “Destiny” will not necessarily be happy with the upcoming extraction shooter. “If you are a destiny player and are not interested in PvP at all, that’s probably not for you, because there will be PvP interactions,” said Ziegler. “At some point another player will meet you and shoot you.”

He added: “I think if you are only looking for PVE experiences, marathon is definitely not the right game for you. (…) We can say with a clear conscience: Yes, that’s not a game for everyone. If you like PvP experiences, especially in Sandbox environments, you will probably like that.”

However, the game director also had to admit that “Destiny” player in “Marathon” could possibly have “a certain advantage”, since “our weapon systems tend to be something similar”. Nevertheless, there is “just enough change that in my opinion you also have to learn some of it”.

“We do not expect Marathon to become Destiny 3.”

In the further course of the conversation, Ziegler emphasized: “We do not expect Marathon to become Destiny 3. Our goal is not to create a new product that Destiny 2 replaces. We believe in the future of Destiny 2 and the team works intensively to understand the needs of the players. But if you like Destiny and also enjoys PvP-Sandbox experiences in other games, then marathon could be very exciting for you be.”

In “Marathon”, players as runners in three -way teams in futuristic environments compete against each other in order to recover and extract valuable resources and thus develop their characters. Speed, precision and tactics form the cornerstones of the gameplay, whereby Bungie attaches great importance to a balanced gaming experience. There are six different types of runners with individual skills to choose from.



“Marathon” will be released on September 23, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. From April 23 to May 4, there is a closed alpha test, for which interested players can now register via Discord by entering the command /Alpha in one of the game channels. However, Bungie points out that the test is primarily planned for North America and that there can be restrictions outside of this region. Playstation codes are also limited to North and South America.
