Lower Saxony Cities and municipalities penetrate permanent financial relief before the change of management in the state government. “We know Olaf Lies as a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and cooperative minister,” said the President of the Lower Saxony Association of Cities and Municipalities, Marco Trips, about the designated head of government. However, his start of office falls into a time with structural problems, which is why drastic decisions are necessary.

From the local perspective, the two most important topics that reads as Prime Minister are “the permanent support of the catastrophically derailing municipal finances and a clear and serious reduction in burdens through unnecessary bureaucracy,” said Trips.

A “close, constructive and sustainable cooperation with the state government,” added the President of the Lower Saxony City Day, Oldenburg’s Mayor Jürgen Krogmann (SPD). The municipalities are also dependent on the country “as a advocate in the federal government”: “Lower Saxony must have a strong voice in the federal government, so that municipal interests are also represented powerfully by the country.”

Change of government is planned for May 20th

It was only at the end of March that the state government announced that the counties, cities and municipalities also provide 600 million euros for investments. In addition, there are 40 million euros for the work of the official veterinarians. The country has so far rejected a permanently higher participation of the municipalities in the income of the country.

Lower Saxony’s long -time Prime Minister Stephan Weil announced his resignation on May 20. The successor should be read – as head of government as well as as chairman of the SPD Lower Saxony.
