The Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof has entered the Golden Book of the City of Hamburg. Previously, the 52-year-old filmmaker was received by Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) and cultural senator Carsten Brosda (SPD) in the town hall. «With his critical films, Mohammad Rasoulof directs the world’s view of the social and political conditions in Iran. His entry in the city’s golden book underlines Hamburg’s appreciation for his artistic achievements and his commitment to democracy, freedom and human rights, »said Tschenscher.

Rasoulof had to flee from Iran in 2024 and has lived in his adopted home of Hamburg again since then. His last film “The Sow of Holy Feigenbaums” had gone into the race for the Oscar for the best international film for Germany, but did not get the price. The polytric thriller revolves around the mass protests in Iran after the death of the young Kurdin Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. In the center, a couple with two daughters in teenage age is located. The film was mainly produced in Germany and was therefore able to go into the race for the country.

After accusation and threat of prison, Rasoulof left Iran last spring. “The Sowing of the Holy Feigenbaum” also has chances of the Golden Lola for the best German feature film.
