Nobody sings, it is oppressive: have around an hour for around an hour Good Friday Women and men partly worn centuries -old, survival -sized figures through the alleys of Lohr am Main in Lower Franconia. The Good Friday procession is considered one of the oldest in German -speaking countries and represents the suffering path of Jesus Christ from the Lord’s Supper to the crucifixion.
Since 1658, relatives of craftsmen guilds and their descendants on Good Friday have been in silence through the idyllic half-timbered city. You can only hear rhythmic bangs and mourning choirs from the music bands. It is only at the end of the silence to pray and sing on the church square.
Up to 150 kilogram figures
The basic idea of the procession was once to bring the faith closer to the people who could not read in the Bible. Around 600 people play a year with the move, thousands of spectators line the path of the procession.
13 stations from the Way of the Cross are shown every year. In cloudy weather and cool temperatures, many people followed the impressive train through Lohr.
The large figures rest on wooden frames. They are up to 150 kilograms and are worn by four carriers each. According to the Lohrer Good Friday procession support group, responsibility for religious customs has been with the region’s craftsmen for centuries.
Among other things, the holy sacrament, capture and mocking of Jesus, the scourge and the course of Jesus to the crucifixion – with your own cross on the back are shown.
