Bavaria Universities continue to enjoy a high popularity among students from all over the world. According to current estimates, between 376,000 and 389,000 students at the universities and universities in Bavaria were enrolled in the summer semester 2025, said State Chancellor Florian Herrmann (CSU) after a meeting of the Bavarian cabinet in Munich. The new semester has been running at the universities since mid -March, and it started at the universities on April 1.

Just below record value of 2024

According to Herrmann, in the new semester, the record for the number of students from the study year 2024 is not achieved. At that time, more than 405,000 students were enrolled in the Free State. However, this is not due to a sunken attractiveness, but rather because due to the return to the Abitur after nine years, significantly fewer students went to universities.

A third of the students come from abroad

This is compensated for “a bit by a high proportion of new students from abroad,” said Herrmann. The internationalization of the student body is “a very important topic”. In 2024 it was over a third for the first time – 34 percent of new students came from abroad. This is “a remarkable number”, since in the following years this also opened up the chances that graduates also settled in Germany and worked here for companies.

Many new courses

Herrmann emphasized that the attractiveness of the Bavarian university landscape is also increased by a variety of new courses. As examples, he cited a part-time master “Advanced Health Care” at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg, the master’s degree in “Digitization and Sustainability in Material Science and Engineering” at the University of Bayreuth or the “Master’s course Visual, Computing and Artificial Intelligence” at the University of Applied Sciences for Applied Sciences Coburg.
