Bolsonaro pronounces on judgment at the Supreme Court: “I hope justice”

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said on Tuesday that he expects “justice” in the judgment of the complaint that accuses him of involvement in an attempted coup in 2022. The complaint was filed by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and involves eight people, including the former president.

During an interview with journalists in Brasilia, Bolsonaro stated: “We always expect justice. I’m fine. We always expect justice, nothing is based on the accusations made partially by the Federal Police.”

Bolsonaro made a surprise appearance at the Supreme Court (STF) on Tuesday, hours before the trial began, and sat next to his lawyers in the front row to accompany the session.

This trial marks the beginning of the analysis of the complaint by the first class of the Court, which will decide whether or not to accept the complaint of PGR. The prosecution involves Bolsonaro and seven other allies, who would have participated in a plan to prevent the inauguration of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), elected president in 2022.

The complaint revolves around a criminal organization accused of architecting actions, culminating in the invasions and depredations of the buildings of the three powers on January 8, 2023. Today, the First Class of the Supreme Court, chaired by Minister Cristiano Zanin, is responsible for the analysis of the case, involving Bolsonaro and seven other accused of one of the main nuclei of the alleged criminal organization.

The trial is expected to be out of decision on the acceptance or not of the complaint presented by pgr. If the ministers decide to accept the complaint, the criminal action will be filedwith due process of law, contradictory and broad defense, beginning the complete judicial process, which will include the collection of evidence, testimonies and new steps of the process.
