With three World Cup belts, Tina Rupprecht climbs into the ring in Potsdam – with one more she leaves him again. The Augsburg native chose “Undisputed” Champion in the narrow World Cup association fight with Sumire Yamaka. And afterwards is speechless.
Tina Rupprecht wrote German boxing history and crowned the undisputed world champion in the nuclear weight. The 32-year-old defeated the Japanese Sumire Yamanaka in the association fight in Potsdam on points. The Augsburg native now holds the four World Cup belts of all large associations. No German boxer and no boxer had done that before her. “I am honestly overwhelmed, I can’t realize it yet,” said Rupprecht in the MDR: “I think we were advertising for women’s boxing. She was a super strong fighter, great respect for Sumire.”
Rupprecht had previously already had the titles of the associations WBA, WBO and WBC and snatched their opponent from their 15th victory in the 17th professional beam. In addition, the 1.53 meter fighter also defended the prestigious title of the box Bible “The Ring”. The specialist journalists award this when, from their point of view, the two best boxers in the world compete against each other. Only Max Schmeling had achieved this as a German fighter in 1930.
The two boxers fought a close fight. Half was difficult to recognize advantages for one or the other side. “It’s a tight match, I have to say. I have Tina on my piece of paper at the front,” said the German boxing icon Regina Halmich after five out of ten laps. Afterwards, Rupprecht, who seemed to have physically easy advantages, also set goals again and again. Yamanaka remained dangerous.
The triumph of Potsdam is the biggest moment in Rupprecht’s successful career. In 2018 she initially brought it to the world champion in minimum weight, but that title she lost in 2023. Then she went deeper into the atomic weight (up to 46.2 kilograms) and last year with successes, both against the Czech Fabiana bytyqi and Eri Matsuda from Japan – and the historical chance against Yamanaka.
