From VfL Wolfsburg into the superstar world: Kevin de Bruyne shapes an era at Manchester City. In ten years, the club and city mature to the family home. Now the Belgian says goodbye with emotional words.
Kevin de Bruyne looked into the distance, melancholy was in his gaze. And because the picture went around the world in black and white, only a sky-blue scarf around the neck caused a splash of color, his fans quickly realized: that was it. De Bruyne leaves Manchester City. After ten years. And at least 13 titles.
“I get to the point right away and would like to let you know that this will be my last months as a Manchester City player,” wrote de Bruyne on Instagram. Fast. Straightforward. To the point. As the 33-year-old played football and sometimes still playing, he also announced his farewell. It is the end of a success story.
This is “a sad day,” said team manager Pep Guardiola. After all, de Bruyne is a “the biggest midfielder in the history of the Premier League”, Toni Kroos called the Belgian a “special player” at X. No wonder: In 413 competitive games so far, the offensive star has shaped a decade of success since 2015.
“The best chapter”
Together with Guardiola, de Bruyne was able to celebrate six titles in the Premier League, two FA-Cups, four league cup victories and the first Champions League triumph in club history. “It would not have been possible without him,” enthused the Starcoach. The captain’s performance in the past ten years was “excellent”.
De Bruyne had once made his breakthrough in the Bundesliga, and he became a star in Manchester. “This city, this club, these people” gave him “everything”, wrote the captain of the Belgian national team. “Every story comes to an end, but that was definitely the best chapter,” wrote de Bruyne. When exactly he will leave his “home”, it still seems unclear. “I don’t know, he has to decide,” said Guardiola.
Club World Cup already without de Bruyne?
Because: In summer, City is still fighting for the club World Cup. De Bruyne has a contract for the group phase (June 15th to 27th) – but no longer from the round of 16 (July 1). A mini extension would therefore be necessary. “I think the club has to speak to him, or he has to say what he wants to do,” said Guardiola.
De Bruyne already gets the first advances. His ex-club VfL Wolfsburg already extends the sensors, although maybe not meant very seriously. “Dear Kevin, do you remember? You and I ten years ago? How about both of us again?” The Bundesliga team tweeted.
Eight games in the league are still facing the midfield engine with Manchester City, but the championship title is out of reach. Only in the FA -Cup does De Bruyne still have a secure chance of a farewell title – City is in the semi -finals there. The Bruyne is particularly important: “Let’s enjoy the last moments together.”
