DETROIT (AP) — Venezuelan Lenyn Sosa hit a three-run homer in the third inning to give the Chicago White Sox a five-run lead that put them on their way to defeating the Detroit Tigers by 9-5 on Sunday.
Kerry Carpenter’s grand slam in the fifth inning brought Detroit within one run, but they couldn’t get any closer. Cuban Bryan Ramos’ productive single produced two runs in a four-run seventh inning that restored a comfortable cushion for Chicago.
Detroit earned a wild card in the American League after beating the White Sox on Friday to end a decade without making the postseason, and will face Houston on Tuesday.
The Tigers finished 86-76, an eight-game improvement from last season, for their first winning season since 2016.
For the White Sox, the Cubans, Ramos was 2-for-4 with two runs produced and two runs scored, Luis Robert Jr. was 1-for-5 with runs scored, and Miguel Vargas was 0-for-3 with runs scored. Venezuelan Sosa is 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
For the Tigers, the Dominican Wenceel Perez from 4-2.
