“Harry Potter”: the franchise actors who have died

(CNN) – The “Harry Potter” franchise is hugely popular around the world, and the loss of any of its figures is met with mourning.

More than 20 actors from the “Harry Potter” films have died in the two decades since the saga began. The most recent loss was that of beloved Maggie Smith. The actress, who played the stern but fair Professor Minerva McGonagall, has died at the age of 89.

Below are some of the other cast members who have died.

Gambon took on the role of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, after the death of Richard Harris in 2002. In total, Gambon played Dumbledore in six of the eight “Harry Potter” films. He died at age 82 after a “pneumonia attack” in 2023.

Alan Rickman in

Rickman died at age 69 in 2016 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He played Severus Snape.

Robbie Coltrane, Verne Troyer and Daniel Radcliffe in

Troyer rose to fame playing “Mini-Me” in the Austin Powers movie, but also played Griphook in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” He died in 2018 at age 49.

The Irish actor played the role of Dumbledore in the first two “Potter” films. He died in 2002 at age 72 after a battle with Hodgkin’s disease.

Helen McCrory in

The woman who played Narcissa Malfoy died “peacefully at home” after battling her husband’s cancer, “Homeland” actor Damain Lewis announced in 2021. McCrory was 52 years old.

Robbie Coltrane in

Coltrane was a fan favorite for having played Rubeus Hagrid in all eight “Harry Potter” films. The Scottish actor died in 2022 at the age of 72.

Maggie Smith and Daniel Radcliffe in

Phillips voiced the Sorting Hat in “Harry Potter” and died in his sleep at age 98 in 2022.

Daniel Radcliffe and John Hurt in

The Oscar nominee who portrayed store owner Garrick Ollivander died at age 77 in 2017.

Timothy Bateson as Kreacher, the house elf, in

Bateson voiced the elf Kreacher in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” before dying at age 83 in 2009.

The writer and theater actor played Frank Bryce in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” He died in 2012 at the age of 89.

Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge, Robert Hardy as Cornelius Fudge and George Harris as Kingsley Shacklebolt in

Hardy played Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge. He was 91 years old when he died in 2017.

Roger Lloyd Pack in

Lloyd-Pack died of pancreatic cancer at age 69 in 2014. He played Bartemius “Barty” Crouch Sr. in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”

Harry Melling as Dudley Dursley, Richard Griffiths as Vernon Dursley and Fiona Shaw as Petunia Dursley in

Griffiths played Harry’s uncle, Vernon Dursley. He died in 2013 at age 65 after complications following an operation.

Dave Legeno as Fenrir Greyback in

The actor and mixed martial arts expert who played werewolf Fenrir Greyback was found dead in California’s Death Valley in November 2014. The death of Legeno, 50, was determined to be due to heat stroke. .

Hazel Douglas as Bathilda Bagshot and Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter in

Douglas enchanted us as Bathilda Bagshot, witch and author of “A History of Magic” in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” He died in 2016 at age 92.
