Lack of guarantees: UEFA takes away the Champions League final from Milan

UEFA takes away Champions League final from Milan

UEFA must find a new location for the 2027 Champions League final. Because the city couldn’t guarantee that the stadium and the surrounding infrastructure would shine in new splendor by the final, Milan has canceled the major event.

The final of the 2027 Football Champions League will not be played in Milan’s San Siro Stadium as planned. The European Football Union UEFA announced this after the Executive Committee meeting in Prague. Since the city of Milan could not guarantee that the renovation of the arena and the surrounding area would be completed by the time of the men’s final, UEFA decided not to award the final to the Italian metropolis.

The announcement continued that the tender for a suitable venue would be reopened. A decision on the new final venue is expected in May/June 2025. The final of the current Champions League season will take place on May 31, 2025 in the Allianz Arena in Munich. A year later, the premier class final will be played in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

It was only at the end of May that UEFA announced a whole series of final locations for the coming years: the final of the Europa League 2027 will be played in Frankfurt, the final of the Conference League 2026 will take place in Leipzig. The 2026 Champions League final has been assigned to Budapest, while Milan’s Giuseppe Meazza Stadium has been chosen as the designated final venue for 2027 – subject to commitments from the city of Milan.

Now the northern Italian metropolis has to wait for its fifth final in the premier class. The Champions League trophy was last awarded at San Siro in 2016: Real Madrid beat city rivals Atlético. In 2001, FC Bayern Munich triumphed on penalties against FC Valencia in the Milan final.
