The president, Joe Bidenand vice president and Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, They are in Washington DC to address the escalation in the Middle East. Both will travel separately to sites devastated by Hurricane Helene.
Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz briefly shook hands after being introduced by CBS moderators.
Regarding immigration, one of the most important issues for voters
Vance was asked about Trump and Vance’s promise to implement the largest mass deportation in US history, and whether it would separate migrants from their US-born children.
Vance said the first thing to do is stop the migration. “We have to stop the bleeding,” Vance said, alleging that the United States has an immigration crisis because Harris wanted to undo Trump’s border policies.
Vance said that The United States should deport “criminal migrants” first. He also blamed Harris for children crossing the southern border into the United States with drug mules.
“My point is that we already have mass separations of children” because of Harris’ policies, Vance said.
In response to Vance’s claims, Walz said all interested parties want to find a solution to address the high rates of migrants illegally crossing the southern border, with the exception of Trump.
“We all want to solve this, most of us want to solve this,” Walz said, noting that “that’s why we had the fairest, toughest immigration bill this nation has ever seen.”
Walz then criticized Trump for derailing a legislative package negotiated by Republicans and Democrats and said that enacting it into law would deprive him of a critical electoral campaign issue for his candidacy for the Presidency.
Walz refers to Trump’s opposition to bipartisan border bill that would have increased border security spending by $20 billion. Harris has said she will work to pass the bill if elected.
“What would Donald Trump be talking about if we actually did some of these things?” Walz said, noting that Trump had four years in office to address the situation on the U.S.-Mexico border and promising to build a border wall, of which a fraction was completed.
“Pass the bill. She will sign it,” Walz said, referring to Harris.
He then said that immigrants have been “dehumanized” and “vilified,” and criticized Vance for promoting false narratives about the Haitian population in Springfield, Ohio.
“This has consequences,” Walz said.
Vance called Trump’s plans carry out large deportations as a blessing to American workers. Economists are divided on that questionpointing out that mass deportations would cause a significant reduction in the labor market that could slow the growth of the economy.
Walz said Americans’ shift in favor of mass deportations It is the result of Trump’s demonization of immigrants. “We could come together and figure this out.”
Vance again dodged the question about the return of family separation of immigrant families which Trump has referred to repeatedly.
Vance said fixing the border means “empowering” U.S. border agents. The bipartisan bill Trump opposed would have hired 1,500 more officers.
Walz accused Vance of demonizing immigrants coming to the United States because he doesn’t want to solve immigration problems. There has been no immigration reform since the Reagan administration.
“I think Senator Vance wants to solve this, but by supporting Donald Trump and not working together to find a solution, it becomes a talking point, and when it becomes a talking point like this, we dehumanize and demonize others human beings,” Walz said.
