Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) wants to contact Russian President Vladimir Putin directly for the first time in almost two years. DIE ZEIT learned this from government circles. A telephone conversation is planned in the run-up to the G20 meeting in Brazil in November. However, the interview has not yet been requested.

Scholz would be the first head of government of the most important supporting countries Ukrainewho resumes direct contact with Putin. The last phone call between Scholz and Putin took place in December 2022. US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also last spoke directly with Putin in 2022.

Meanwhile, the situation in Ukraine remains tense. Russia has been attacking the country’s energy supply for months, and winter is approaching. Negotiations on further support for Ukraine are scheduled to take place in Germany in mid-October. US President Joe Biden invited people to the meeting. The USA and Germany are Ukraine’s largest arms suppliers.

Last week, Putin announced that he would expand the criteria for the possible use of nuclear weapons. The announcement was seen by observers as a threat – including against Ukraine’s Western supporters. Russia has also announced that it wants to further increase its military spending: around 130 billion euros are planned in the budget for 2025, around 30 percent more.
