Her arrest from Ukrainian troops on the front caused a stir internationally. Now two Chinese soldiers are appealing to their home country.

Both soldiers spoke in military clothing and handcuffs on Mandarin in front of journalists. Armed and masked Ukrainian soldiers were at her side. It was not apparent whether the Chinese soldiers volunteered. The two men said they were captured in fighting in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. They would have joined the Russian army based on online recruitment ads. They rejected connections to the Chinese government.

Ukraine announced the capture of the two Chinese last week. Beijing denied any participation in her recruitment for the Russian army.

The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj said on Friday that “several hundred” Chinese would fight for Russia in Ukraine. He also accused Beijing of being “involved” into the conflict. China rejected these statements as “irresponsible”.
