He World Cup 2030 is in danger, that is one of the conclusions that can be drawn from the meeting held by FIFA, UEFA, RFEF and CSD this Wednesday in Madrid. FIFA and UEFA have sent a very forceful message, and if the Federation does not have a president within a maximum period of three months, Spain could be left without a World Cup. The key date is December 11, when the venue will be awarded at the FIFA congress.
Emilio García Silverolegal director of FIFA, Rolf TannerFIFA governance director, Angelo Rigopoulos, UEFA integrity director, Luca NicolaUEFA governance director, Alvaro de Miguelgeneral secretary of the RFEF, Jordi Aparisidirector of the legal area and Eduard Dervishajinstitutional relations of the Federation met this Wednesday afternoon with the Higher Sports Council.
«This is the last point that we have discussed with the Higher Sports Council», he answered Emilio García Silvero to the clear question of whether the 2030 World Cup for Spain with this situation.
«There is a FIFA congress on December 11 where the 2030 World Cup will be awarded. Those who vote in this congress are its 211 members. What I can say is that, obviously, at an international level there are many doubts with the situation in which the RFEF finds itself today. “For us it is difficult to be able to work without a visible head at the head of the Federation in a project that will last six more years, until 2030,” said the legal director of FIFA.
«UEFA and FIFA are convinced that this World Cup thing is not going to happen. We are convinced that the RFEF is going to call an electoral process immediately, and here is the general secretary of the Federation. Today at the meeting we saw the CSD’s willingness and good will to help and go hand in hand with the Federation. That does not mean going hand in hand with any candidate. It is going hand in hand with the institution. On December 11, when the 211 FIFA voters choose the venue for the 2030 World Cup, it will be awarded to Spain, Portugal and Morocco,” he said. Emilio García Silvero.
Possible sanctions that Spain faces
The measures range from power expel Spanish teams from international competitions (that is, the Champions League, Europa League, Club World Cup…) even to the selection of the competitions it usually competes in (European Championship, World Cup…). There are no concrete measures yet, although there is a clear warning about the great project in which Spain and its Football Federation are immersed: the 2030 World Cup.
If there is no president of the RFEF, there will be no World Cup in Spain. For this reason, FIFA and UEFA, jointly at this meeting, have expressed to the Government, in a climate of “cordiality”, that the elections for the presidency of the RFEF and its Assembly must be called now and that within a maximum period there will be a president for three months. The deadline is not just any one: in December the World Cup is officially voted on, that is when FIFA grants the candidacy for the 2030 event, so there must already be a president in the RFEF.
