The works of the new lighting and the collector of Playa de Palma seven months late and they will not be there for the next tourist season as initially planned by the City Council of the Balearic capital. Therefore next summer, as has happened during the current one, the work will have to stop again, as it is an area of great tourist influxthe largest in the Balearic Islands.
Instead of finishing the works in March of next year, if there are no new incidents will conclude on December 23.
The municipal government headed by popular Jaime Martinez has also approved an upward modification of the contract with a increase in cost of 1.5 million of euros, so the final budget already exceeds 11 million euros.
The reconstruction work of the new rainwater collector (CAZ) was stopped due to an initial modification of the contract and then had multiple stoppages due to the possibility of modifying the project without demolishing the existing slab, something that was finally ruled out.
The works continued normally from February 27, 2024 until June 12, when They were stopped at the request of tourist businessmen and merchants.
At the moment, These two works of simultaneous execution are paralyzed due to the risk of accidents posed by the massive influx of tourists in the area, in addition to the social impact and the limitations of the municipal ordinance regulating noise and vibrations during the summer months. They are scheduled to resume on October 20.
Considering the time that it has been and will be unemployed, and given the increase in the budget, the Palma City Council has considered it appropriate extend the planned period of 18 months by seven additional monthsdating the end of it on December 23, 2025.
All this without prejudice to the fact that when the modified projects are drafted, other conditions may be found that cause this estimate to vary.
This extension of the execution period has been accompanied by a upward modification of the contract due to the poor condition of the side walls of the collector, that do not have the armor that the project considered.
During the execution of the works it was seen that the walls and the upper slab of the collector had more damage due to corrosion of the reinforcement than originally anticipated in the project measurements.
The CAZ is a underground gallery that runs beneath the front line promenadebetween the mouths of the Jueus and Sa SÃquia torrents. The function of this gallery, which is 3.95 kilometers long and two meters high, is to collect rainwater from the area and direct it in an orderly manner towards its exit through the aforementioned torrents, avoiding spills and overflows.
Currently, and after 40 years of operation, the structure requires repairs to the floor, walls or ceilings that can be carried out from the inside in some sections, but in others, 60% of the layout, it will be necessary to completely remove the upper slab and rebuild it.
The remodeling of the concrete channel that channels stormwater to prevent its discharge into the sea is accompanied by the replacement of the current old concrete columnsby 169 new streetlights more than 13 meters high that will illuminate the promenade and also the sandy area of the beach to gain safety.
The lighting modernization project, agreed upon with residents, merchants and hoteliers of Playa de Palma, also contemplates that, on the second line, 127 10-meter street lights will be installed and that in three spas there will be pergolas with solar panels, which They will make shadows during the day and light up at night.
