The presidents of Ligue 1 clubs, gathered in college this Tuesday, chose the path of rupture with Dazn, the main broadcaster of the championship, and while the British streaming platform must still pay two deadlines, on April 30 and June 30, for a total of 140 million euros. The decision was then validated by the vote of the Board of Directors of the LFP.
It remains to know the contours of this unexpected outing, precipitated by the failure of Dazn, which had to submit to multiple contortionist exercises to exceed the bar of 500,000 subscribers on the French market. The platform launched a legal action against the LFP, which it holds responsible for this rout: it claims 573 million euros “for observed failure” and “deception on the goods”.
Difficult mediation
For more than a month, a mediator mandated by the Paris Commercial Court has been trying to find common ground between the two parties. According to a source close to the file, a short-term solution brought by Dazn is an agreement for a withdrawal from the end of the current season with “conditions to be defined” (as it stands, the contract binding Dazn to French football runs until 2029, with a possibility of leaving at the end of the 2025-26 season). According to RMC Sport, the LFP transmitted to the mediator a financial proposal for the breach of contract just after the voting of the CA of the LFP, with an answer from Dazn expected before 7 pm.
