(CNN Spanish) – The forest fires that this week affected several parts of Quito were eliminated this Friday, said Mayor Pabel Muñoz and the firefighters of the capital of Ecuador.
The mayor he said on his X account that these were the worst fires in 30 years, and he thanked both the firefighters of Quito and those of other cities and the national authorities who supported the efforts to put out the fire.
Earlier, the official reported in a statement that so far there are four people detained for their alleged responsibility in the fires.
The first two detainees were a 19-year-old young man and a Colombian, who were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office has open investigations to determine how the fire originated.
The Quito firefighters, meanwhile, announced in their count of the closure of the Unified Command Post that was installed to deal with the fires in the three affected sectors: Guápulo, Parque Metropolitano and Cerro Auqui.
These fires intensified on Tuesday, when they generated clouds of smoke visible throughout the city. The next day, they had the capital declare an emergency situation.
On Thursday night, the mayor reported that the fires were being controlled—with the help of the rains that fell that day—and added that daily activities would begin to resume their usual rhythm this Friday. The official said that there were no deaths due to these events.
