Coach Teddy Atlas surprised by praising the performance of Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez about Edgar Berlanga, whom he beat on the cards on September 14, and assured that he looked like the “good wine.”
In an interview with Fight Hub, Atlas – who has always been critical of the Mexican – expressed that Canelo Álvarez He had a “beautiful” fight and with millimeter precision to the body worthy of admiration.
“Canelo looked great, he really did. It looks like a fine wine, perhaps improving in certain areas. And there are certain things he doesn’t do that the younger Canelo did, but there are other things he does better than the younger Canelo. The things he doesn’t do, he’s not as active, he doesn’t combine punches as often or consistently, but he places his punches beautifully, politely, intelligently, damagingly, fighting in and out,” he said.
“But really fighting inside he did a beautiful hand-to-hand fight, short and beautiful combinations, Joe Louis style. I couldn’t give a man a better compliment than that in boxing. (…) Things like that, only good fighters can do, only experienced fighters can do, showing their experience again, placing their blows with millimeter precision to the body, like that hook,” he concluded.
In the fight, Canelo Álvarez started dominating the shares from the beginning and in the third round he sent the Puerto Rican to the canvas with a left hook. He almost managed to stop him, but Edgar Berlanga recovered and was able to continue.
The Mexican punished the Puerto Rican with body blows and gave a good performance to the public present at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the end the judges scored the victory for the unified super middleweight champion by broad unanimous decision (117-110, 118-109 and 118-109).
Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, 34, retained his unified 168-pound championship against Berlanga and now he has a record of 62 wins (39 by knockout), two losses and two draws in his professional career.
