Sylla promises: “There’s more to come”

Schalke’s investment of millions in Moussa Sylla has so far been a success. After seven match days, the match winner of the game against Münster has already scored six goals. No player in the second division currently has more. And Sylla promises many more goals.

With a smile on his face, Moussa Sylla walked through the players’ tunnel towards the dressing room after the final whistle of the game in Münster at the weekend. On the way there he was a popular man in the interview zone of the stadium. The striker helped FC Schalke win with a brace. 2:1 after 0:1 – Sylla has once again proven to be Schalke’s life insurance in the early phase of the 2024/25 second division season.

Already gone again in winter?

And Sylla is eager to experience more success – with the team, but also with a view to his personal quota. “There’s more to come,” announced the 24-year-old. It is entirely possible that Sylla will have a double-digit number of goals by the turn of the year. It is also conceivable that the first clubs will then come knocking to sign Sylla. A bid should be at least five million euros.

The offensive player only moved to the pot from the 2nd French league (Pau FC) this summer – for two million. Squad designer Ben Manga, who is also busy looking for a coach these days, brought Sylla to Gelsenkirchen with two ulterior motives: Firstly, Schalke were hoping for immediate help – it worked. On the other hand, the Royal Blues are speculating on a significant increase in the player’s value, in the long term in the double-digit million range. The trend is already correct.

In Münster, Sylla proved that he can score goals even out of nowhere. He was hardly involved in the Schalke game at all. “It was a game without any big penalty area scenes for us,” said Jakob Fimpel, for whom the second of two games as interim coach is scheduled for Saturday against Hertha BSC (8:30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker). Sylla scored a brace with the only two S04 chances of the game in Münsterland.

On a par with Zivzivadze in the top scorers list

With his six goals this season, Sylla leads the top scorers list in the 2nd league after seven matchdays together with Karlsruhe’s Budu Zivzivadze, plus an assist from Sylla, who didn’t get any penalties for his goals. Captain Kenan Karaman is responsible for that, and he currently has four goals this season, one of which was scored from a penalty.

Karaman said about Sylla after the 2-1 win in Münster: “He’s just there in the crucial moments. I’m glad that I have a partner who can also score goals.” Last season, Karaman was completely alone in the field. In 2023/24 he ended up with 13 goals – a good value that Sylla, if extrapolated, could have achieved by the end of the first half of the season this time.
