Shohei Ohtani reaches MLB base record that was intact for 21 years

Shohei Ohtani added another record to his historic season in 2024. The Japanese went 3-for-5 against the Padres and reached 400 total bases, a figure that no one has recorded since 2001.

Ohtani hit two singles and a double in the eighth inning to reach 400 bases. in the 7-2 victory over the San Diego Padres and won the Western Division pennant.

The Japanese is only the first player since 1930 to have 400 or more bases since 1930when Babe Herman did it with 416 when the team belonged to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

In the last 20 years, legends like Miguel Cabrera, Albert Pujols, and Aaron Judge have passed by, but none of them could reach 400 bases.

Four players did it for the last time in the last 21 years: Barry Bonds, Luis González, Sammy Sosa and Todd Helton.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have three games remaining against the Colorado Rockies as visitors at Coors Field. Ohtani will have a chance to surpass Herman’s mark if he plays the remaining three games.

Shohei Ohtani for record extra base hits

The Japanese can also match another brand that is 21 years old intact. In that same 2001 season, all four players had 100 extra-base hits and Ohtani is 3 short.

The Dodgers designated hitter has 53 home runs, 37 doubles, 7 triples, for a total of 97 extra-base hits. Only 12 players in Major League history have hit 100 or more extra-base hits in a single season.

Shohei Ohtani is doing particularly well hitting at Coors Field. He has a .375 batting average with 15 hits, 3 home runs, 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored in 11 career road games against the Rockies.

It remains to be seen if Dave Roberts continues to use him as a designated hitter with the Division secured.
