The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchezwill not attend next Wednesday at the Cervantes Award ceremony, in the Paraninfo of the University of Alcalá de Henares, awarded to the writer Álvaro Pombo. The act will be chaired by the Kings and will feature the interventions of the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, and the award -winning author.
The Cervantes Prize is the highest award of Spanish letters granted every year by the Ministry of Culture. On previous occasions, Sánchez did attend the delivery ceremony, as it is traditional for the president of the Government to attend this official act.
Last year, however, the socialist leader was received with boos and screams of “scoundrel!” by citizens who awaited the arrival of the authorities. Those present threw the kings alive, in addition to compliments towards the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
The occasions when Sanchez has been able to verify firsthand the discomfort of the street, something that has become usual in its public appearances is repeated.
On this occasion, the socialist has avoided that his assistance to this official act becomes a new sample of citizen discontent, although this supposes not to go to an act chaired by the kings.
Last year, Sanchez went to the Cervantes award just a few hours before communicating to the citizens his decision to make a few days to “stop and reflect” about his continuity as president.
His presence was commented by a gesture to the king who did not go unnoticed. The socialist president received Felipe VI With hands in pocketsa little protocol that was subject to a great controversy.
