Three couples of the sea eagle have permanently settled in Hamburg – a considerable success for domestic nature conservation. Sea eagles prefer breeding sites near water or in regions with high voin density. The Hamburg nature reserves offer good conditions for this, the environmental authority said. Nevertheless, the breeding of the young animals is not always successful: between zero and two chicks every year – depending on the weather and disorders.
According to the environmental authority, disorders during the breeding season are a central problem. These include human activities as well as drone flights or attacks by other animals such as raccoons. “Disruptions in the breeding season quickly lead to the breeding task,” the environmental authority continued.
The sea eagle had almost disappeared in Germany for a long time. For decades he was persecuted, poisoned and pushed out of his habitat. The population began to recover only with the admission of the European Bird Protection Directive in the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Today the majestic bird gradually returns to its former habitats – including Hamburg.
