Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Daniela Behrens has shown herself open to the suggestion of her Bremen counterpart Ulrich Mäurer (both SPD) to punish clubs with point deductions for fan riots involving pyrotechnics. “I find colleague Mäurer’s idea of punishing clubs with point deductions in the event of massive riots quite understandable,” Behrens told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. “In principle, however, I think it would be more effective to follow the existing regulations DFB to finally apply it consistently.”
In the event of riots or the massive use of pyrotechnics as a weapon, for example, these would already provide for the possibility of the game being canceled. “However, this means is not used at all in practice,” the Interior Minister told the newspaper.
Mäurer recently said that imposing the penalties primarily in the form of point deductions for the relevant team was “a possible option” for him. “On the one hand, this would hit the clubs in a much more sensitive way and could lead them to carry out more consistent entry searches,” he told the multimedia portal “Deichstube”.
Minister again threatens to exclude away fans
Since the burning of pyrotechnics in the stadiums continues, politicians are again increasingly intervening in this security debate. In recent months, Interior Minister Behrens has pushed hard for the second division derby between Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96 to take place without visiting fans this season. In the end, the 96 supporters were partially excluded from the next duel on October 6th.
In the event of an escalation, Behrens once again threatened the second division clubs with the exclusion of visiting fans. “It’s very clear: If the changed concept with significantly fewer guest fans does not lead to less violence and fewer injuries in the stadium, then we will no longer be able to allow guest fans in the future,” she told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”.
