An 18-year-old staggers across the Oktoberfest. The security service and police initially suspect that the famous measure was too much. But the truth is much more serious.
What initially seemed like a typical case of excessive alcohol consumption at Oktoberfest turned out to be a life-threatening medical emergency. Early on Sunday evening, an 18-year-old Oktoberfest visitor was picked up by security because he appeared apathetic and staggered.
The young man was initially handed over to the police. But to an officer with medical training, the situation seemed strange. Despite difficulties in communicating with the patient, the police officer decided to present him to the medical station at the Aicher Ambulance.
The officer’s caution paid off: the examination revealed hyperglycemia – a massively elevated blood sugar level that was responsible for the 18-year-old’s loss of consciousness. It was not known why the man’s blood sugar levels were so elevated. The 18-year-old may be diabetic.
The patient was immediately transported to a Munich hospital. This incident occurred on an otherwise quiet second weekend of the Oktoberfest. The paramedics at the Aicher Ambulance treated a total of 342 patients on Sunday, with the Oktoberfest stretchers being used 105 times.
