Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with the corruption scandal for the Brazilian building group. The court found the 62-year-old of the Money laundering for guilty, since he received illegal grants from Odebrecht and the Venezuelan government for two presidential campaigns.
Humala’s lawyers announced that it would appeal against the judgment. The public prosecutor had called for a prison sentence of 20 years for Humala, which was President of the South American country from 2011 to 2016.

Humala’s wife Nadine Heredia was also guilty. It should asylum in the Brazilian embassy in Lima, as the Reuters news agency reported, citing the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Former Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018) and Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) are also involved in the extensive Odebrecht scandal. Toledo had been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison last year. The ex-state leader Alan García (2006-2011), who was also accused, had committed suicide when the police visited him at home to arrest him.
The corruption affair for Odebrecht shook several states Latin America. The investigation gradually promoted a sophisticated system for paying lubricating funds to politicians, parties, state officials and managers.
