The Government of Parallel National Unit of Myanmar (NUG), which coordinates the popular struggle against the military in power, announced a unilateral partial ceasefire today to facilitate relief efforts to the earthquake.
The announcement reports that the people’s defense force, their armed arm, will take a two -week break in offensive military operations from Sunday in areas affected by the earthquake.
The statement also stated that it “would collaborate with the UN and non -governmental organizations to ensure safety, transportation and establishment of temporary rescue and doctors camps” in the areas it controls.

“We appeal to all ethnic groups and citizens to actively cooperate with NUG and revolutionary forces in the provision of comprehensive emergency rescue and assistance to the earthquake victims,” the announcement added.
The plan represents a political challenge to the military, who strongly restricted the efforts of help to more than 3 million people displaced by war, even before the earthquake.

Resistance supporters asked for relief efforts to incorporate freely transported aid to areas under the control of the national unit government.

There were no immediate comments from the military about the announcement, which was released shortly before midnight (local time).
