Motorhome duty: new safety regulations are coming | Important change

A new safety regulation for camping vehicles will come into force in 2025. Anyone who ignores them risks a fine – and their own health.

Important change for all owners of motorhomes and caravans: From mid-2025, campers who cook or heat with propane gas in their motorhome or caravan will have to have their gas system checked regularly again. Specifically, a new paragraph in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) stipulates that the inspection of liquid gas systems must take place every two years in the future – regardless of the general inspection (HU).

This uncertainty is now over: from June 19, 2025, Section 60 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) will come into force. If you do not have a valid emissions test for your motorhome or caravan by then, you should do so in good time. The check is carried out by recognized experts, including the usual testing institutes and automobile clubs. Their experts are certified by the German Liquid Gas Association (DVFG). The cost is between 40 and 80 euros and the exam takes around 20 to 45 minutes.

Important: Tests are necessary before commissioning, after restarting and after changes to the system. Owners of mobile homes and caravans who have not yet had a gas test must do so by June 19, 2025.

Anyone who ignores the obligation to check must expect a fine. If the deadline is exceeded by two to four months, 15 euros will be due, if four to eight months the fine will be 25 euros and if more than eight months there will be a fine of 60 euros. In addition, some campsite operators refuse to allow you to stay if the gas test sticker on the rear of the vehicle has expired.

The ADAC therefore recommends adhering to the deadlines and having the liquid gas system professionally inspected in good time – also in the interest of your own safety.
