MLB: Cuban Adolfo Luque, first Latino in a World Series

“In life, respect is earned, honesty is appreciated and loyalty is returned.”Anonymous

Today is Saint Michael the Archangel’s Day, a very special day in my life, because on September 29, my daughter Feybi Michelle was born, to whom I wish many blessings, happiness and prosperity.

Today, September 29, the curtain falls on the Major League season and what better occasion to remember the anniversary of the birth of Tomás Troncoso Cuesta.

The first Latin baseball player to participate in a World Series was the Cuban pitcher Adolfo Luque Known as “The Pride of Havana,” he pitched in two games for the Cincinnati Reds in the 1919 series against the Chicago White Sox. Luque did not get a decision in the win-loss column.

The second Latino to participate in a World Series was the Cuban Mike Gonzalez in 1929 with the Chicago Cubs.

In the 1949 World Series Luis Rodríguez Olmo He was the first Puerto Rican to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. “El Jibaro”, pride of the Isla del Encanto, was on that occasion the first Latino to hit a home run in a World Series.

Later in time, Beto Ávila was the first Mexican in 1954 with the Cleveland Indians; Luis Aparicio the first Venezuelan in 1959 with the Chicago White Sox and Héctor López the first Panamanian in 1960 with the New York Yankees.

In 1962 the brothers Felipe and Mateo Alou and, today in the hall of fame Juan Marichalwere the first from the Dominican Republic in 1962 with the San Francisco Giants shirt in a series against the New York Yankees.

A day like today

  • 1979: Manuel Mota sets a major league record with his 145th career pinch-hit hit, a single to right field, in the Dodgers’ 6-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Dodgers Stadium. The Santo Domingo native surpasses the all-time record set by Smoty Burgess who had his last hit as a pinch hitter in the 1967 season.

  • 1993: Norberto Martin hits his first hit in the Major Leagues, driving in the winning run for the White Sox against Seattle in the 12th inning.

  • 1996: Nerio Rodríguez debuts in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles, where he pitched 6 innings, allowed 3 hits and lost.

  • 1999: Manny Ramirez, Cleveland, had his highest RBI total in a season since 1938 with his 161st of the year.
