Managing director David Wagner is leaving Greifswalder FC

Greifswalder FC and David Wagner, who was most recently a central player in the regional league team as Sports Director, are now going their separate ways.

The report on Tuesday evening came as a surprise. David Wagner (50) is no longer responsible for the sporting affairs of Greifswalder FC as managing director. Both parties agreed on this on Monday after intensive and trusting discussions, as the GFC writes in its press release.

The initiative for a separation came from Wagner, who asked to terminate his contract, which was actually still valid, at the end of the season so that he could then return to his homeland with his family. The club then decided to release David Wagner early so that planning for the current and next season could be continued strategically.

“Walk with extreme gratitude”

“I worked with incredibly cool people every day. The decision was therefore very difficult for me,” said Wagner: “I wanted to inform the club about it at an early stage in order to enable more long-term planning for the club. The immediate release is then only logical. I’m not leaving feeling bad, but with extreme gratitude,” he assures.

“On behalf of Greifswalder FC, I would like to thank David Wagner very much for his work, his commitment and his identification with the GFC. He has developed us enormously on a sporting level and made our team a top team in the Northeast Regional League,” says Heiko Jaap, chairman of the regional league team from the Baltic Sea, the 50-year-old.

Wagner joined Greifswalder FC as sports director in March 2022, was promoted to the regional league with the club in the summer of 2022 and narrowly failed to gain promotion to league three in the last round. The Greifswalders are currently ranked sixth in the table in the Northeast relay.
