Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has remembered the deceased basketball legend Dikembe Mutombo with emotional words. “He inspired and gave hope to a whole generation of young Congolese people around the world,” the Belgian wrote on social networks. Like Mutombo, the father of the FC Bayern Munich coach comes from what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The 2.18 meter tall Mutombo died of a brain tumor at the age of 58. “We watched the NBA because of him when we grew up. We are proud of our origins because of him. He showed us that we can dream big and be successful,” the 38-year-old Kompany continued. “He will be missed.”

Use for charitable purposes

Mutombo played in the NBA from 1991 to 2009 and was a defining figure for a long time. After the end of his career, he dedicated himself to charitable and humanitarian causes, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “He showed us that we should value our roots. Not just with words, but also with actions,” Kompany wrote.
