Copenhagen – A cloud of mourning lies above the Danish royal family. As has now become known, Queen Mary (53) and King Frederik (56) have to cope with the loss of their close friend Michael Halbye (64 †). The 64-year-old died on April 12 in a tragic skiing accident.
Friend of King Frederik and Queen Mary succumbed to internal bleeding
The accident occurred on a ski slope in Switzerland. Michael Halbye, the deputy chair of the investment company Kirkbi, fell heavily and was immediately flown to the hospital. Despite all efforts, however, he succumbed to internal bleeding.
Michael Halbye was not only an estimated colleague on the board of Mary Fonden, but also a close friend of the royal couple. His relationship with King Frederik began over 20 years ago when Halbye gave the crown prince an introduction to the Danish economy at the time. A close private friendship developed from this professional connection that has grown over the years.
Queen Mary publicly comments on her friend’s death
Queen Mary was deeply affected by the loss of her friend. On the Mary Fonden website, she wrote: “I took the news of Michael Halbye’s sudden death with great sadness. Michael Halbye was a person who had a rare positive energy, extensive knowledge and a strong commitment to people outside the community.”

By the way: Queen Mary recently had to cancel her participation in two events for health reasons. Used sources: maryfonden.dk, t-online.de, gala.de, bunte.de
