In Kassel, activists from the “Last Generation” are blocking Autobahn 49. However, their concern has nothing to do with cars.
In the northern Hesse city of Kassel, several activists blocked the A49. The North Hesse police confirmed this at the request of t-online. A traffic jam around five kilometers long formed.
A police spokeswoman said the activists began their action around 4 p.m. After the supporters of the “Last Generation” did not leave the motorway after repeated requests, the meeting was broken up and the activists were carried off the road. An exact number of participants has not yet been announced.
So far there have been no detentions or arrests, only personal details are being recorded. According to the spokeswoman, it is not yet clear whether people will subsequently be taken into custody.
According to their own statements, the group wants to use their campaign to put pressure on the mayor of the documenta city, Dr. Sven Schoeller, exercise. The “Last Generation” demanded that he should end his support for Kassel-Calden Airport. Lina, Johnsen, a spokeswoman for the group, said: “An airport closure is a win-win situation: more tax money for sensible investments and less climate destruction!”.
The regional airport has been heavily criticized for years because of its immense costs. According to the “Association of Taxpayers”, it will cost around six million euros in taxpayers’ money every year.
