Lionel Messi and Inter Miami They aspire this Wednesday to conquer the MLS Supporters’ Shield but for that they will have to overcome a tough challenge against the Columbus Crew in the most outstanding match of matchday 36 of the MLS.
Messi’s team is eight points ahead of the Crew, but has played one more game than the Columbus team.
The math is easy for Florida people: If they win tomorrow, they will mathematically secure the MLS Supporters’ Shield that every year the best team in the regular season wins.
This trophy is different from the MLS Cup, which each year recognizes the team that wins the MLS playoff.
If they tie or lose in Columbus, Inter Miami will continue to be the favorite for the title but will still have to do the rest in the remainder of the regular season: Saturday, October 5 at home against Toronto and Saturday the 19th at home against the New England Revolution (the week between both games is a FIFA window).
Winning this Wednesday would close the second trophy in Inter Miami’s history after the Leagues Cup they won last year. In addition, it would give those of Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba the field factor throughout the ‘playoff’.
But to do so they will have to defeat a Columbus Crew that is considered one of the best teams in the United Stateswhich is the current champion of the MLS Cup and the Leagues Cup and has very outstanding players like the Colombian Juan Camilo ‘Cucho’ Hernández or the Uruguayan Diego Rossi.
This year they have faced each other twice with shared victories: a 2-1 for Inter Miami in June in the league and a 3-2 for the Columbus Crew in August in the round of 16 of the Leagues Cup.
Inter Miami is not coming into this match at a good time since, in its last four games, all of them since Messi returned from his injury in the Copa América final, accumulates a single victory and three consecutive draws.
Apart from the confrontation between the Columbus Crew and Inter Miami, the MLS will present other very notable matches on this weekday matchday such as New York City-Cincinnati, Orlando City-Philadelphia Union, Colorado Rapids-LA Galaxy or Los Angeles FC-St-Louis City.
