“Incorrect decision”: DFB withdraws highly controversial sending off

“Incorrect decision” DFB withdraws highly controversial sending off October 1st, 2024, 4:32 p.m. The DFB sports court has withdrawn the second yellow card against the Stuttgart captain in Wolfsburg after studying the television images. Karazor was fouled himself – not the other way around. The original decision caused a huge stir at the weekend. Professional footballer Atakan Karazor from Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart will not be suspended for a game after his yellow-red card in Wolfsburg. This was announced by the German Football Association (DFB). This means that VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß can also use the midfielder in Stuttgart’s upcoming home game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Sunday (7.30 p.m./DAZN and in the live ticker on ntv.de). VfB captain Karazor was shown the second yellow card and therefore yellow-red in the 63rd minute of the 2-2 draw against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday for an alleged foul on VfL captain Maximilian Arnold. VfB then lodged an appeal against the expulsion. Absolute “exceptional case” Referee Sven Jablonski had already admitted immediately after the game that he had made a wrong decision. The referee had spoken out in favor of a change in the rules because until now video evidence has not been allowed to intervene in cases involving yellow cards – even if they lead to a dismissal. After Jablonski’s report and studying the television images, the DFB sports court withdrew the second yellow card. Karazor did not foul Arnold, but the Wolfsburg player fouled the Stuttgart player. However, the first yellow card for the 27-year-old remains. Like Jablonski before him, the DFB sports court also found that Arnold had actually committed the foul and Karazor “had not committed any offense”. The DFB sports court also determined that this was an “exceptional case”. There was in fact “an erroneous decision by the referee, which is, without any doubt, objectively incorrect.” Therefore, in accordance with paragraph 11, number 3 of the DFB’s legal and procedural rules, the imposed sanction can be lifted.
