Medical surveillance is essential for Jair Bolsonaro. In the aftermath of a twelve -hour operation at the abdomen, the former president of Brazil begins a convalescence “very delicate and prolonged” and will have to stay “at least two weeks” in the hospital, his doctors said on Monday.
Aged 70 years old, Jair Bolsonaro remains in intensive care in Brasilia and has been supplied intravenously since the Sunday surgery, carried out to absorb an intestinal occlusion linked to the sequelae of a stabbing in the middle of the presidential campaign in 2018.
The final result of the operation “is excellent”
The far-right leader had to be operated on after having felt strong abdominal pain on Friday, at the start of a tour in the northeast of the country to mobilize his supporters, two weeks after being returned to trials for attempted coup against Lula.
“According to doctors, my state of health is stable, but my convalescence requires intensive care,” said former president on X on Monday. His cardiologist, Leandro Echenique, said at a press conference that the operation had been “extremely complex”, but that “the end result is excellent”.
Bolsonaro “Make jokes”
“The post-operating will be very delicate and prolonged,” added the doctor, stressing that the next 48 hours will be “critical” to determine the rest of the treatment. But he pointed out that Jair Bolsonaro was “aware”, and that he had “even made jokes”.

In his message on X, the former head of state recalled that it was his “sixth operation linked to the 2018 attack”, and his ninth hospitalization “due to complications related to this episode”. In September 2018, he had been stabbed in the middle of a crowd bath, undergoing numerous intestine perforations, before being elected president a few weeks later. Now ineligible until 2030 for disinformation and despite his trial for attempted coup which is to open in the coming months, he hopes to help compete in the presidential election in 2026.
