The US President speaks more or less openly about the annexation of the huge island. The head of Greenland, however, holds against it.
The newly elected Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has made a clear rejection of the ownership claims of US President Donald Trump. Trump says that he would get Greenland, Nielsen wrote on Facebook and then became clear to his part: “Let me say that clearly: The USA does not get Greenland. We don’t belong to anyone else. We determine our future ourselves.”
Nielsen also advised to react calmly to the property claims of the US President. “We shouldn’t react out of fear. We should react with calm, dignity and cohesion,” wrote the politician of the social -liberal party of democratic, which had come into office just a few days ago. Nielsen leads a broad coalition that belong to four out of five groups in the parliament.
Trump must be clearly shown that Greenland only belongs to its residents. “It was like that yesterday. It is today. And that’s how it will be in the future,” wrote the 33-year-old.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz commented on area claims that the US government had recently formulated against Canada. “Canada is not a state of someone. Canada is a proud, independent nation,” said the SPD politician on Sunday evening at the opening of the Hannover Mass, whose partner country Canada is this year. “We stood by your side,” he added in English. Canada has friends all over the world – and especially many in Germany and Europe.
Scholz pointed out that it was very unusual that one had to emphasize among neighbors, Allies and G7 partners that one wanted to be independent. Prime Minister Mark Carney was forced to assure him before taking office that Canada “never, in whatever form, would be part of the United States”. “They are sentences that also move us here in Europe,” added the chancellor.
The US President said last week: “We have to have Greenland.” This is very important for international security and world peace, according to Trump to reporters in the White House. About the same time, his Vice President JD Vance paid a visit to a US military base in Greenland and sharply criticized the Danish government. Previously, Trump had also spoken of making Canada the 51st state of the United States.
Greenland is officially part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but enjoys a largely autonomous status within the so -called Danish Reich community. The island has around 57,000 inhabitants.
The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen wants to travel to Greenland on Wednesday. According to her, it is about strengthening the bond with Denmark. Among other things, discussions with Nielsen are planned. She has the greatest respect for how the Greenlanders dealt with the great pressure on their country, said Frederiksen, according to a message. It is a situation that demands after unity.
