Federal government flies embassy employees from Beirut

Rescue flight to Beirut: The Bundeswehr evacuates employees of the embassy in Lebanon.

The Bundeswehr has dispatched an A321 aircraft to evacuate personnel from the German embassy in Lebanon. The plane flew to Beirut on Monday, the Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of Defense said. This should fly out “personnel who are not urgently needed” as well as relatives of the embassy employees.

However, the evacuation does not only apply to Lebanon: the Foreign Office also raised the crisis levels in the foreign missions in Ramallah and Tel Aviv over the weekend. A “diplomatic pick-up” was also initiated in these embassies.

“German citizens who are particularly at risk due to medical circumstances are also taken on the Bundeswehr machine (to Beirut, editor’s note),” the statement says.

The federal government is also calling on all Germans to leave the country. The Foreign Office wants to provide support for German citizens in Lebanon with commercial flights and other means.
