“Munich has the worst housing shortage in a hundred years”

The renowned director complains about the dramatic situation on the Munich housing market. It hits the film university students particularly hard.
The renowned filmmaker and author Doris Dörrie addressed the dramatic location on the Munich housing market in an interview with the Tagesspiegel on the occasion of her new book “Living”. “In Munich we have had the worst housing shortage in a hundred years. As long as it is profitable to deal with living space speculatively and the will of political creators are missing, nothing will change,” said the director.
Dörrie, who works as a professor at the Munich Film Academy, is very concerned about the development: “As a professor at the Munich Film University, I talked more than 20 years before Tauben ears that you can only apply to students who can live in the city because the parents take care of it.”
The author, who lives in Munich herself, emphasizes the social consequences of this development. “If you come from another country or have no parental support, you will no longer find a room, one costs 1000 euros in a flat share,” warned Dörrie. This leads to a social restriction “that only better studies, the stories of which only play in such circles”.
When asked why the university does not become active itself, the filmmaker reported on failed attempts: “We have always tried and failed in terms of editions and lack of interest in the city. For example, for container apartments directly behind the film university.”
In her newly released essay band “Living”, Dörrie links autobiographical experiences with considerations about living. In doing so, she also reflects on her parents’ experiences as a war bombed in Hanover and how this loss story shaped her own life.
