Legendary Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo continues to insist he is fully focused on being the perfect team player at Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, rather than collecting more individual accolades in what would be the final stage of his professional playing career.
At 39 years of age, the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner scored on Monday in Al Nassr’s 2-1 victory over Qatari Al Rayyan, in a duel in Group B of the AFC Champions League. This was the fourth consecutive victory for the team led by CR7 in all competitions, and the arrival of new coach Stefano Pioli has undoubtedly suited the team quite well.
A change of mentality: Enjoy and help
“It was a strong and difficult match, like all those in the Asian Champions League, But the most important thing is that we created many chances and defended well to prevent the opponent from creating easy chances,” Ronaldo declared in a post-match press conference.
“It’s no longer important if I’m the best or not, that doesn’t matter to me anymore. It is good for a player to score goalsbut for me it is better that the team wins,” said the one also called ‘El Bicho’.
“I’m used to breaking records and I’m not looking for them anymore. The most important thing for me now is to enjoy and help Al Nassr and my teammates to win,” added the former Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United and also Sporting Lisbon player.
More and more awards for the striker
Last May, Ronaldo became the top scorer in a single season in the Saudi Pro League with a total of 35 goals scored. The Portugal national team captain also managed to score his 901st career goal in a 2-1 win against Scotland in the Nations League last month.
“My goal against Al Rayyan was different and important, because my father would have been happy with it if he were alive, since today (yesterday) is his birthday,” added the man who is currently in the race to score a thousand goals in his professional career, and at the level he is at right now, it seems that it is a matter of time before he achieves it.
