Unemployment grew in Andalusia by 7,720 people (1.21%) in September, according to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy. Despite the increase (52% lower than what occurred last year in this same month), the total number of unemployed is the lowest figure in a month of September since 2008.

In the last year, unemployment fell in Andalusia by 65,150 people (-9.15%), which is the fifth best rate this month in the statistical series. Since the beginning of the comparable historical series, in 1996, unemployment in Andalusia has almost always increased in September (27 times), and has only decreased on one occasion.

In Spain, unemployment increased in September by 3,164 people (0.12%) and the total number stands at 2,575,285 unemployed.

On social networks, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, boasted this Tuesday that “Spain is the engine of European growth” and its Executive continues to “create more and better jobs, above other large European economies.”

For its part, the Board stressed this Wednesday that Andalusia “leads the decrease in unemployment in the last year in absolute terms” by contributing “almost one in two fewer unemployed people in the entire country.”

In statements to Europa Pressthe general secretary of the Public Employment and Training Service of the Ministry of Employment, Business and Self-Employment, Victoria Martín-Lomeña, has framed the unemployment data for the month of September in a “seasonal dynamic of the Andalusian economy” typical of the end of the summer campaign. In relation to the year-on-year data – 9.15% drop in unemployment – he noted that they are “especially positive” and “the best year-on-year record since August 2023.”

Data by sectors

Unemployment also increased in the group without previous employment (2,610 unemployed, 3.63%). However, it fell in the rest of the productive sectors: agriculture (-2.88%), construction (-2.76%) and industry (-0.07%). In the last year, unemployment decreased in all sectors: agriculture (-17.80%), services (-8.81%), industry (-8.24%), group without previous employment (-7.82% ) and construction (-7.68%).

By sex, Unemployment rose last September by 0.45% for men and 1.69% for women. Compared to September 2023, it fell by -9.87% for men and -8.69% for women.

By age, Unemployment grew by 8.58% in those under 25 years of age, 1.14% in the group between 25 and 44 years of age and 0.24% in those over 45 years of age. In the last year, it decreased -14.34% in the case of those under 25 years of age, -13.07% in the group between 25 and 44 years of age and -5.51% in those over 45 years of age.

Provincialized data

By province, unemployment fell in Seville (-312) while it rose in Cádiz (+3,522), Granada (+1,300), Málaga (+1,290), Jaén (+517), Huelva (+485) and Córdoba (+351 ).

Compared to September of the previous year, unemployment fell by -13.31% in Huelva, -11.44% in Jaén, -9.93% in Almería, -9.67% in Córdoba, -9.24% in Seville, -8.72% in Málaga, -7.95% in Cádiz and -7.26 in Granada.

Regarding contracting, 267,616 contracts were signed in Andalusia in the last month, which represents an increase of 33.25% compared to the previous month and 0.81% compared to September 2023. Of the number of contracts registered In September, 57.06% were temporary (compared to 63.12% the previous month) and 42.94% were permanent (36.88% in August).

Social security

Regarding the data on Social Security affiliates, September closed with a decrease of 12,613 contributors (-0.37%) compared to the previous month, bringing the total number in the community to 3,386,991 people, while In Spain there was an increase of 8,805 people (0.04%).

In the last 12 months, membership in Andalusia grew by 68,425 contributors, which represents an increase of 2.06%. The community is the third in which members have increased the most, in absolute terms, in the country as a whole, registering an increase of 473,411 contributors (2.28%) in the last year.

Self-employed

In September, Andalusia maintained the national leadership in the number of self-employed workers, after an increase of 1,874 people (0.3%), which places the total number at 582,182 people. In Spain as a whole, the self-employed increased by 5,731 members (0.2%), bringing the total number to 3,377,081 members of RETA.

Compared to the month of September 2023, the number of self-employed workers grows in Andalusia by 11,335 people (1.98%). In Spain, it increased by 37,748 people. Andalusia continues to lead national growth in the number of self-employed workers in the last year.
