Competition for the DFB: Italy wants the Women’s European Championship in 2029

Germany has a new competitor in its bid for the 2029 Women’s European Championship. Italy would also like to host the tournament. This is intended to promote the development of women’s football in the country.

In addition to the men’s European Championship in 2032, Italy also wants to host the women’s European Championship in 2029.

After the men’s home European Championship became a football festival in the summer, Germany would like to host the women’s European Championship in a few years. Around two weeks ago, the DFB expressed its interest in hosting the 2029 Women’s European Championship in Germany. Now another competitor, Italy, has joined the race.

The Italian association announced on Tuesday after a board meeting that it would like to host the women’s 2029 European Championship in addition to the men’s 2032 European Championship, which is being co-hosted with Turkey. The association sees the women’s European Championship as an “important step towards the 2032 European Championship in order to strengthen our organizational capabilities as a country system,” said association president Gabriele Gravina.

Association president speaks of an “act of respect”

In addition, the development of women’s football in Italy should be promoted. And it is also about including cities and stadiums that will not be involved in the men’s European Championship in 2032. “We believe that it is an act of respect for the numerous, already efficient structures in Italy, which most likely cannot take part in EURO 2032, but can be part of an event as important as the Women’s European Championship 2029,” Gravina said.

The Italians’ application was submitted to UEFA on September 24th. In addition to the two major associations from Germany and Italy, Portugal, Sweden and Denmark are also applying for the tournament. The two Scandinavian countries want to host the European Championships together.

The preliminary application documents must be received by UEFA by March 12, 2025. The European association would like to announce the host of the 2029 Women’s European Championship in December 2025. Before that, the Women’s European Championship will take place in Switzerland in July 2025.
