In connection with the explosions, shootings and hostage-taking, which are attributed to organized crime, 13 arrests have already been made and 33 suspects have been identified. Well-trained specialists are needed to combat this type of crime.
Acts not against randomly selected citizens
Hermanns spoke of “milieu acts, scene acts”. The people of Cologne are rightly concerned, but the crimes were not actually directed against randomly selected citizens. “The victims are always the subject of the story behind these acts.” However, explosions of such force as those recently seen could always endanger bystanders.
The truth is that neither the arrested suspects nor the victims wanted to talk about the background. The victims also only wanted to make very limited use of the protective measures used by the police. Hermanns pointed out that there was close communication with the police in the Netherlands during the investigation.
Does the “Mocro Mafia” play a role?
The term “Mocro Mafia” is repeatedly used in connection with the explosions, but the police and public prosecutor expressly do not adopt it. “Mocro” is a slang word for Moroccans in the Netherlands. Some Dutch people with Moroccan roots are involved in the drug trade there.
Explosions in front of homes, shops and businesses are often used as a means of pressure in the criminal world in the Netherlands to intimidate rivals or debtors. According to Hermanns, the illegal drug market in Cologne is currently “in unrest”.
