Climate goals: Cabinet approves amendment to the energy transition law

The Schleswig-Holstein state government has approved the new version of the law Energy transition and climate protection (EWKG). The state parliament decides on the draft. With the amendment, the goal of climate neutrality by 2040 will be enshrined in law, the government announced. The same applies to the goal of at least 45 terawatt hours (TWh) of annual electricity generation on land from renewable energies from 2030.

The people in Schleswig-Holstein between two seas are particularly affected by the climate crisis and at the same time benefit from the opportunities offered by the energy transition, emphasized Energy Transition Minister Tobias Goldschmidt (Greens).

“Becoming a climate-neutral industrial country is a huge effort that we are accompanying with a good dose of pragmatism. But this is worth it – because we are making our society and economy fit for the future,” he said.

With the change in the law, the state government says it is also reacting to changing framework conditions at the federal level. The amendment of the Building Energy Act (GEG) and the adoption of the Heat Planning Act (WPG), the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) and the Climate Adaptation Act (KAnG) made far-reaching legal adjustments necessary, including at the state level.
