Drivers 70 years and older They will no longer have to take a knowledge test to renew their licensesthe California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced this Monday.
In a statement, DMV Director Steve Gordon said all drivers were required to take the knowledge test once their licenses expired after turning 70. what was a policy but not a law.
In recent years, an e-learning session could have been opted forwhich is not currently mandatory either.

“We are eliminating the written knowledge test for those who do not have traffic violations on their record to improve customer service,” Gordon said in a statement.
“If thousands of people no longer need to visit the DMV, or can spend less time in an office, people who need to complete their paperwork at one of our offices they can receive better service“he added.
However, an office visit is still required. for an eye exam and an updated photograph for people over 70 years of age who are renewing their driver’s license.

First-time drivers must complete a knowledge test.which for years was called a written exam. The same will happen with newcomers to California who want to obtain their driver’s license.
Drivers renewing their license with poor driving records must retake the knowledge test. Some may choose to the DMV e-learning course that, in most cases, is virtually impossible to fail.
The DMV said some older drivers with expired licenses may have already received renewal notices stating they require a knowledge test, but who are eligible not to do so. In those cases, testing will be waived during visits to department offices.
