Boulevard on the Alster: Renovation of the Jungfernstieg is progressing and on schedule

The reconstruction of the Jungfernstieg is entering its final phase: both lanes have been completed, the bus diversions have been lifted, and the Jungfernstieg is now open again to regular services, taxis, cyclists and temporary delivery traffic in both directions, the transport authority announced. The redesign is intended to make Hamburg’s “parlor” more livable, more attractive, safer to drive and more climate-friendly.

Work on and on the sidewalks will continue from October. In order not to affect the Christmas business and the “Winterzauber” Christmas market on the Alster, a construction break from the end of November to the beginning of January 2025 is planned in close coordination with businesses and the city management. The reconstruction of the boulevard on the Alster is scheduled to be completed at the end of May 2025 with the final tree planting and green work.

In the past, pedestrian and bicycle traffic shared very limited space on the waterfront, causing conflicts, the authority said. This situation has now improved significantly. In the future there will be a continuous lane in each direction that is 3.50 meters wide. To ensure that cyclists can easily pass stopped buses, a three-meter-wide, flat median strip will be installed at the stops. Away from the stops, this strip serves as a crossing aid for pedestrians. The speed limit remains at 30 km/h.
