Borussia Dortmund has to accept the loss of one of his best talents. The 16-year-old moved to Benfica Lisbon free of charge in summer.

Dortmund – this is a bitter loss for Borussia Dortmund. Diego Castel Branco will leave BVB in the direction of Benfica Lisbon next summer. The 16-year-old is considered one of the most promising talents in the Westphalia youth department. Not even a financial compensation jumps out for Dortmund, because Castel Brincco will join the Portuguese capital club free of charge.

Consultant confirms change from Castel Branco from BVB to Benfica

While there was still no official communication from the clubs, Castel Branco’s consultant Mehmet Eser confirmed to the Pay TV station Sky the upcoming change. “It is true that Diego will leave BVB. He has a lot to owe Dortmund. Lisbon has shown him the opportunity to play for the professional team in the coming season,” said Eser. “Diego absolutely wants to perceive this opportunity and prove itself in Portugal at the highest level.”

In Lisbon, the enormously dangerous youngster will be equipped with a professional contract by 2028 and should initially appear in the U19. In Germany, Castel Bringo inspires with an incomparable torrier. In the current season, the U17 youth league will have a whopping 18 games in 21 games.

Castel Branco already debuted in the U19 of the BVB

The teenager particularly distinguishes its flexibility. With the BVB jungstars, he not only ran regularly over both wings, but also through the middle. His enormous talent also recognized Mike Tullberg (interim coach of the professional team after the dismissal of Nuri Sahin), who already helped Castel Brincco to his debut in the U19 youth league in April.

The next step abroad is now pending for the highly talented attacker. At Lisbon he steps into the footsteps of some German professionals. In recent years, Benfica in players such as Julian Weigl (2020-2022), Luca Waldschmidt (2020-2021), Julian Draxler (2022-2023) and Jan-Niklas Best (2024-2025) have repeatedly recorded German players in their own ranks.
