The SEZ on Landsberger Allee in Friedrichshain was a prestigious GDR project. It has been mostly empty for many years. t-online shows what it currently looks like there.
A demolition of the former sports and recreation center (SEZ) in Berlin-Friedrichshain is getting closer and closer. On Tuesday (October 1st), Building Senator Christian Gaebler said again that he wanted to build apartments, among other things, at the location on Landsberger Allee. “I am not yet aware that the need for fun pools has increased and the need for housing construction has decreased,” said the SPD politician. In this respect, he sees no reason to change the development plan.
The building had previously been evacuated since morning. You can read more about this and the long legal battle that led to it here. This means that the large site and the former GDR model water park, which has fallen into disrepair in recent years, are once again owned by the State of Berlin.
“We have to see whether we can integrate elements of the SEZ into the new development,” Gaebler continued about the future of the area. “But we certainly won’t be able to maintain the SEZ as it stands now,” explained the Building Senator. “We will integrate sports and leisure activities into the new development.” This was also agreed with the municipal housing association WBM, which is responsible for housing construction. What exactly this might look like is not yet known.
Many East Berliners will remember the SEZ – if it is demolished – as a popular meeting place. But what exactly does the dilapidated building look like now? t-online has selected and summarized photos of the 47,000 square meter complex from March 2024.
