One day before the start of the celebrations for German Unity Day, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) invited citizen delegations from all 16 federal states Schwerin received. “They were chosen by their state governments because they are particularly committed to helping others and their country through volunteer work,” explained the incumbent President of the Federal Council.

The citizen delegations will therefore undertake a visit program in Schwerin and Wismar in the next few days and will take part in the festive events for German Unity Day on October 3rd. The celebrations begin on Wednesday with the opening of a three-day community festival in downtown Schwerin. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is expected at a citizen dialogue. A big light show is announced at the castle in the evening.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is organizing the celebrations for German Unity Day this year. The reason is that the federal state currently holds the presidency of the Federal Council. Next, Saarland will take over the presidency on November 1st. The celebrations for the Day of German Unity 2025 will then take place there.
